The role of in-vehicle cameras in automobiles

Time of issue:2021-12-10

Vehicle-mounted cameras communicate with other automotive systems via a communication bus, ensuring that all operations are completed in real time. For example, in the event of emergency braking, if a potential collision is detected, the brakes must engage as quickly as possible. Therefore, drivers must receive immediate warnings about impending collisions without any delay—this underscores the critical role of high-definition camera modules in automobiles. Vehicle-mounted cameras don't just capture the road conditions ahead; they can also leverage video stream data to calculate the positions of other vehicles, read traffic signs, distinguish between streetlights and vehicle headlights, detect taillights, and even identify lane markings—even when no road markings are present. Moreover, high-definition camera modules must perform these tasks flawlessly under a wide range of challenging driving conditions and at varying speeds, throughout the entire service life of the vehicle. Consequently, the design specifications for the lenses and image sensors used in high-definition camera modules are far more stringent than those for consumer electronics camera modules. Before being integrated into end devices, such camera modules must undergo extensive testing at specialized automotive camera manufacturing facilities. Furthermore, vehicle-mounted cameras must meet even higher and more rigorous standards. The primary purpose of vehicle-mounted cameras is to enhance driving safety. Beyond managing lighting effects and delivering clear image quality, these cameras must accurately determine the relative speed and direction of travel of other road users, and they must assist in real-time traffic condition assessment and continuous risk analysis. As an increasing number of driving functions become automated, the complexity and dynamism of these calculations will only grow. Thus, innovation in vehicle-mounted cameras has become essential—and such innovations would not be possible without the advancement of camera module manufacturers. At camera module factories, optoelectronic components can also be customized to create tailored vehicle-mounted cameras. In summary, we believe that the manufacturing requirements for vehicle-mounted camera modules are exceptionally high.
