How can camera module manufacturers enter the automotive camera industry?

Time of issue:2021-12-10

Whether they’re mobile phone camera manufacturers or the many automotive camera vendors, if they truly want to establish a solid foothold in the automotive camera market and reap substantial benefits from the industry’s growing pie, entering the OEM (original equipment manufacturer) segment is an absolute must. Next, let’s dive into the topic of OEM automotive cameras.

Let’s take a look at the characteristics of in-vehicle cameras: Multiple types: The in-vehicle camera market is highly segmented. For different applications, camera module manufacturers must design molds and procure chips tailored to each specific feature. As a result, different camera module products require multiple production lines. Low individual demand: Front-mounted in-vehicle cameras need to align with the OEM’s front-end designs. Consequently, camera modules for different vehicle models have varying production-line requirements. However, the shipment volume for any single model will inevitably be relatively small, meaning that actual demand is far lower compared to smartphone cameras. Camera module factories even face the challenge of frequently having to retool their production lines. High durability requirements and stringent quality control: Front-mounted camera modules must be able to function reliably for 5 to 10 years—or even longer. Beyond longevity, these products must also ensure consistent performance. For example, one Japanese customer places great emphasis on quality control because these products are directly related to human safety. They demand a zero-failure rate at zero kilometers—meaning zero parts per million (PPM). Long validation period: From initial verification to actual deployment, front-mounted in-vehicle cameras can take anywhere from two to three years. High unit price—and thus substantial profit margins: Due to the factors mentioned above, the overall cost of producing these cameras is higher. To ensure profitability, manufacturers must set higher prices.
